JERUSALEM – Israel's military chief says his troops have inflicted damage on Hamas in the Gaza Strip but will continue fighting to achieve more.
Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi says soldiers are doing "exceptional work" and that Hamas fighters, infrastructure and government institutions in the territory have been dealt a serious blow.
But he says "we still have work to do." He says the military will continue striking at Hamas and will work to further reduce militant rocket fire at Israeli towns.
The rocket fire led to the offensive Israel launched on Dec. 27, and has continued. Gaza health officials say more than 900 Palestinians have been killed, at least half of them civilians.
Ashkenazi was speaking Tuesday to a parliamentary committee in charge of foreign affairs and defense.
